Athens is a year-round destination, but the experience changes drastically between seasons. Here is how to adapt your HOHO strategy.
Summer (June – September)
- The Weather: Hot. Temperatures often exceed 35°C (95°F) in July and August.
- The Bus Advantage: The moving bus provides a breeze. It's cooler than walking!
- Essential Line: The Riviera / Beach Line is a must. You will want to escape the concrete center for the coast.
- Timing: Sightsee early (8-11 AM) and late (after 5 PM). Spend the midday melting hours at a museum or beach.
- Kit: Hat, high SPF sunscreen, water. The top deck has a canopy, but the sun is strong.
Winter (November – March)
- The Weather: Mild. Days are often sunny with highs of 15°C (59°F), though rain is possible.
- The Bus Advantage: If it rains, the buses have a covered section or a retractable roof. You stay dry while seeing the sights.
- The Crowd Factor: Zero queues! You can walk straight into the Acropolis.
- Essential Line: The City Red Line. The beach lines may run less frequently or be too windy.
- Vibe: Cozy cafes, roasted chestnuts on the street, and Christmas lights at Syntagma Square.
Shoulder Season (April/May & October)
- The Sweet Spot: Perfect walking weather, wildflowers blooming (Spring), warm sea for swimming (Autumn).
- Strategy: You can do everything—Acropolis hike in the morning, beach in the afternoon.
Operational Changes
Be aware that HOHO schedules change.
- Summer: Buses run late (until 7-8 PM).
- Winter: Buses finish earlier (around 5 PM) as gets dark. Always check the winter timetable leaflets.
