Greek cuisine is legendary. But you don't need an expensive organized food tour to experience it. You just need to know which bus stop leads to the best bites. Consider this your "Hop-On Hop-Off Menu".

Stop: Omonia / City Hall

The Target: Varvakios Central Market This is the belly of Athens.

  • Meat & Fish Hall: A chaotic, authentic spectacle of butchers and fishmongers.
  • Epirus Tavern: Located inside the market hidden among butchers. Incredible, hearty meat soups (patsas) and casseroles. It's where the locals (and Anthony Bourdain) eat.
  • Spice Street: Evripidou Street (just outside) smells of cinnamon and saffron. Buy dried oregano and tea to take home.

Stop: Monastiraki

The Target: Street Food King

  • Souvlaki: Go to Kostas (Agias Irinis Square nearby) for the spicy sauce or the famous Bairaktaris on the square for the history.
  • Loukoumades: Fried dough balls with honey. Lukumades on Aiolou street offers modern twists on this classic (stuffed with chocolate!).

Stop: Syntagma

The Target: Cosmopolitan Dining

  • Tzitzikas kai Mermigas: A modern take on Greek classics. Great introduction to "mezedes" (tapas).
  • Ergon House: A grocery store combined with a restaurant—farm-to-table Greek produce in a stunning atrium.

Stop: Psiri (Short walk from Monastiraki)

The Target: Meze & Music This neighborhood comes alive at night.

  • To Steki tou Ilia: Famous for lamb chops by the kilo.
  • Bougatsa: Late-night sweet cream pie at Bougatsadiko Psirri. Watch them make the phyllo dough in the window!

Stop: Acropolis / Makrygianni

The Target: Lunch with a View

  • Manh Manh: High-quality cuisine from the Mani region of Peloponnese.
  • Strofi: Historic tavern with a stunning rooftop view of the Parthenon.

The Drink: Frappe or Freddo Espresso

You can't do Athens without coffee. Grab a "Freddo Espresso" (the local obsession) at any stop and bring it on the bus. It's the fuel of Athens sightseeing.
