Everyone gets off at the Acropolis. But the HOHO bus passes right by dozens of hidden treasures that most tourists overlook. Be the smart traveler and ring the bell for these:
1. Kerameikos (Ancient Cemetery)
Typically near the "Thissio" or "Monastiraki" area stops.
This is the most peaceful archaeological site in Athens.
- What it is: The burial ground of ancient nobility.
- See: The Street of Tombs with amazing sculptures (replicas on site, originals in the small museum there) of bulls and sirens.
- Vibe: lush with turtles, flowing water (Eridanos stream), and vegetation. A true sanctuary.
2. The War Museum & Byzantine Museum
Stop: "War Museum" or "Hilton"
Often skipped, but incredible.
- War Museum: Displays weaponry from antiquity to WWII. Real fighter planes are parked outside!
- Byzantine & Christian Museum: Located nearby. A stunning journey through the empire of Byzantium with gold icons, frescoes, and mosaics in a beautiful villa.
3. The Numismatic Museum (Iliou Melathron)
Near "Syntagma" stop
- The Building: The former mansion of Heinrich Schliemann (the man who found Troy). It is arguably the most beautiful neoclassical interior in Athens.
- The Collection: Ancient coins, but the real draw is the painted ceilings and mosaic floors of the house itself.
- The Cafe: A hidden garden cafe in the back is a local favorite for jazz and coffee.
4. Panepistimiou Trilogy
Stop: "Panepistimio" or "Academy"
You will drive past three stunning buildings: The National Library, The University, and The Academy.
- Tip: Hop off to take photos of the statues of Apollo and Athena on the high columns of the Academy. The architecture is Neo-Classical perfection.
5. Ancient Agora
Stop: "Monastiraki" or "Thissio"
Often confused with the Roman Agora.
- Temple of Hephaestus: The best-preserved ancient temple in Greece (better preserved than the Parthenon!).
- Stoa of Attalos: A reconstructed ancient shopping mall that now houses a museum.
These stops offer depth and quiet reflection away from the selfie-stick crowds of the main sites.
