The horseshoe-shaped Panathenaic Stadium made of white marble under a sunny sky

The Panathenaic Stadium, known to locals as Kallimarmaro ("Beautiful Marble"), is a sight that commands silence. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely of Pentelic marble and was the venue for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

The View from the Bus

As the bus cruises down Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, the stadium opens up on your left. It’s a massive horseshoe shape nestled between two pine-covered hills. While you can see a lot from the top deck, this is definitely a stop worth hopping off for.

What to Do Inside

Paying the entrance fee gives you full access to the grounds:

  1. Run the Track: You are allowed to jog on the cinder track where Spyridon Louis won the first marathon. It's a bucket-list moment for runners.
  2. The Podium: Climb onto the winner's podium for the ultimate photo op with the stadium in the background. Raise your arms!
  3. The Royal Box: Sit in the marble thrones reserved for royalty and VIPs.
  4. The Tunnel: Walk through the vaulted tunnel that athletes used to enter the arena. It leads to a small museum in the back.
  5. Museum: Inside, you'll find a collection of Olympic torches and posters from past games (including the London, Beijing, and Rio torches).

Audio Tour

The entrance ticket usually includes an audio guide device which is excellent. It tells the story of the stadium from ancient times (330 BC) to the gladiatorial games of Rome, and finally the 2004 Athens Olympics archery finals.

Nearby

  • Zappeion Hall: A grand yellow neoclassical building located in the gardens across the street.
  • Ardittos Hill: Following a path beside the stadium leads up the hill for a view looking down into the marble bowl—a perspective few tourists see.

For the HOHO Traveler

This stop is heavily featured on the Red Line.

  • Time needed: 45-60 minutes to explore fully.
  • Warning: It's physically open and exposed to the sun. The white marble reflects the heat. Morning or late afternoon visits are best.
