Large cruise ships docked at the busy port of Piraeus on a sunny day

For the millions of passengers arriving at the Port of Piraeus every year, the #1 question is: "How do I get to the Acropolis?" The port is huge, chaotic, and about 12km (8 miles) from the Parthenon. The Hop-On Hop-Off bus "Piraeus Line" (often Blue or Green) is a tailor-made stress-buster for this exact scenario.

Stops at the Cruise Terminals

The buses are designed specifically for you. They are synchronized with cruise ship arrivals.

  • Terminal A (Miaoulis): The main terminal. You will see the bright red, yellow, or blue buses waiting just outside the exit gate.
  • Terminal B (Themistocles): Often for larger ships (celebrity, royal caribbean, etc.). Buses stop here too. Look for the company representatives in branded t-shirts.

Warning: Taxi drivers at the port can be aggressive and charge inflated tourist prices (€25-€50 one way). The HOHO bus offers a fixed price and a return journey included.

The Route: From Port to Parthenon

The journey from Piraeus to Athens city center takes about 30–40 minutes depending on traffic, but it's a scenic drive, not just a commute.

Key Stops on the Way:

  1. Pasalimani (Zea Marina): A beautiful yacht harbor filled with cafes. Great for spotting mega-yachts.
  2. Mikrolimano: A traditional fishing harbor famous for high-end seafood restaurants right on the water's edge.
  3. Planetarium (Eugenides Foundation): One of the most advanced digital planetariums in the world.
  4. Acropolis (Interchange): The bus drops you near the entrance of the Acropolis. This is the Interchange Point where you swap to the "Athens Line" (Red Line) if you want to see the rest of the city center (Syntagma, Panathenaic Stadium, etc.).

Managing Your "All Aboard" Time

Cruise ships have strict departure times. If you miss the ship, it leaves without you!

  • Start Early: Get on the first bus available (usually around 8:00 - 8:30 AM).
  • Buffer Time: Plan to head back to Piraeus at least 2 hours before your ship's "All Aboard" time. Athens traffic can be unpredictable in the afternoons.
  • Interchange Awareness: Remember, if you are deep in the city (e.g., at the Archaeological Museum), you need to switch back to the Piraeus line at the Acropolis interchange stop to return to the ship. Leave enough time for this switch.

Why It's Better Than Ship Excursions

  1. Cost: A HOHO ticket costs a fraction of an official shore excursion (often €20-€30 vs €100+ per person).
  2. Freedom: Spend 2 hours at the Acropolis or 20 minutes; it's up to you. You aren't herded in a group following a flag.
  3. Scenic: You see the coastline and neighborhoods like Kastella that the express buses and sailing transfers miss completely.

Nearby Port Attractions

If you have a short day or get back to the port early:

  • Archaeological Museum of Piraeus: A hidden gem with stunning bronze statues.
  • Hellenic Maritime Museum: Located at Zea Marina, showcasing Greece's naval history.

The Piraeus Line transforms a stressful port transfer into a seamless, enjoyable part of your sightseeing adventure.
